Frequently Asked Questions
I am thinking about volunteering. What should I consider?
First, assess if you have time available each week to commit to volunteering. Then, think about your interests, skills and / or career plans – this will help us determine where you might volunteer.
When do you need volunteers?
We typically seek volunteers with daytime availability during the work week. Limited evening and weekend placements may be available, and are usually in the Gift Shop.
How old do you have to be to volunteer at HSC?
Volunteers must be at least 16 to volunteer at the gift shop. All other roles must be 18 years or older.
What do you look for in your volunteers?
We are looking for individuals that have the desire to help others, are positive, caring, sensitive to the needs of others, are committed to what they take on, and are motivated, energetic and customer-service oriented.
Is there a time commitment?
We require a minimum commitment of one shift per week. Shifts can range from 2 – 4 hours depending on the placement. We ask for a 60 hour minimum commitment from every volunteer.
Do I need any special immunizations to volunteer at HSC?
Like frontline health care workers, volunteers are encouraged to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Additionally, volunteers must have immunity to chicken pox. If you’re unsure of your immunity, please speak to your healthcare provider. As patients are particularly vulnerable to infections, it is important for you to have this protection.
Do I need a Criminal Record Check (CRC)?
Volunteers who will be working with children will require a CRC. After the interview process, those selected will be instructed to obtain a CRC. There is no need to apply for one before then.
What type of references do I need for my application form?
We will request 3 references from you. References may include teachers, coaches, supervisors, co-workers, etc. Please do not use friends or family. We will need their name, how you know them, and their contact information. Be sure to ask each person for permission to use their name as a reference.
Please provide email addresses for international references.
If I volunteer, will it help me get a job at HSC?
Volunteering at any organization will help you gain skills for future employment. Volunteering at HSC is unrelated to HSC job opportunities. If you are job hunting, please see the Careers section of this website.
How do you decide where to place volunteers in the hospital?
Many factors are considered when matching volunteers to a placement including your age, availability, your interests and skills and how they match our current vacancies.
I’m on a student visa. Can I volunteer?
Yes, you can.
I’d like to job shadow someone in health care. How do I go about doing this?
Volunteer Services does not coordinate job-shadowing requests.
Where do I park when I volunteer at HSC?
Complimentary parking is available in the William Avenue, Emily Street, Tecumseh Street and Sherbrook Street parkades.
Do you have opportunities for post-secondary students during the summer months?
Yes. In order for you to start in July, we encourage you to apply in April. Of course, you are welcome to stay on during the academic year. Summer volunteers are asked to make a 6 to 8 week commitment.
Can my group / organization come for one day and visit the children?
We appreciate your generosity; however, due to reasons including protecting patient privacy and health, we cannot accommodate your request.
