Mashkiki Makwa/Muskike Muskwa – The Medical Careers Exploration Program (MCEP)

Mashkiki Makwa/Muskike Muskwa (the Medical Careers Exploration Program or MCEP), is a program that inspires and supports Indigenous youth to learn about, experience, and pursue a wide range of careers in health care.

MCEP was launched by the Pan Am Clinic Foundation in 2007. The program provides students the opportunity to immerse themselves in more than 20 different health care environments across Manitoba, including Health Sciences Centre.

HSC participates in one of the program’s core components – Practicum Days – which allow students to gain an in-depth understanding of a wide range of health care careers, from health-care aides and MRI technicians to doctors, nurses, and surgeons.

These experiences may include:

  • Job shadowing in locations ranging from reception areas to operating rooms;
  • Hands on skills lab experience such as casting, intubation, and blood draws;
  • Opportunity to attend/participate in panels and one-on-one discussions with health-care professionals.

MCEP starts in grade 10 and guides students through a comprehensive approach to post-secondary education. Hands-on practicum experiences, tailored high school courses, cultural events, and additional support make this a unique and innovative educational opportunity.

The program offers students the opportunity to obtain a high school credit and is tailored to specific interests, covering topics such as anatomy, customer service training, CPR, and traditional medicine. The program also organizes events, camps, and scholarships to foster a supportive community and provide students with the resources they need to succeed in their educational pursuits.

In the 2024/2025 school year, more than 100 students are enrolled in the program.

Welcome MCEP students to your department

HSC is proud to welcome MCEP students to our campus as part of our commitment to The Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s Call to Action #23, which strives to increase the number of Indigenous professionals working in health care.

Departments are encouraged to consider how their team might participate in this opportunity to showcase your work while inspiring Indigenous youth to join our health care system. Managers/Directors interested in participating or learning more are encouraged to reach out to [email protected]
