Update Regarding the Ransomware Incident Affecting Parts of the Health Sciences Centre and Cancer Care Manitoba (CCMB) Facilities Maintenance Systems

On August 10, 2026, a ransomware incident was discovered at Health Sciences Centre (HSC). Step were immediately taken to secure the affected network to prevent further unauthorized access.

HSC is following a Cyberincident Response Plan that is based on best practice, and an Incident Command was immediately stood up that is working in lockstep with experts to navigate that process. Cybersecurity experts and specialized legal counsel are guiding our response, and we have reported the incident to law enforcement and appropriate authorities.

While the investigation continues, here is what we have learnt so far.

The central monitoring of the HVAC system was affected, but this has not affected the operation of the systems, which are being monitored at the local level. Air circulation and air conditioning are still operational.

The HSC Security Office is currently closed. We are unable to issue new ID access cards or alter existing ones at this time as they are processed through one of the affected systems. An alternative solution will be in place as soon as possible. The building remains secure, and access cards already issued still work. As a precautionary measure, we have added additional security at the site and Institutional Safety Officers (ISOs) continue to monitor the building.

Understandably, there are concerns regarding personal information of employees during cybersecurity events. Safeguarding information is a key priority for us, and the investigation includes a detailed review and validation of potentially affected systems and data. At this time, the investigation has not determined whether any data has been accessed or removed from our systems. Based on the initial review, we believe that no financial or personal health information has been accessed.

If the investigation determines that any employee information may have been impacted, affected individuals will be notified immediately and provided with recommended next steps.
