David Unger is the Fitness Programming Supervisor and has been working in Fitness Centre for the past 11 years. He is a Certified Personal Trainer (Canadian Society for Exercise Professionals) and has a BA with a Kinesiology major from the University of Winnipeg.
As a child David was actively involved in any sport that could be played in the small community of Crystal City, MB. This passion for sports has never left Dave as he now enjoys running, mountain biking and adventure racing. As a runner David has completed many half marathons, full marathons and trail races. In the last number of years he has participated in longer 50km races and one 12 hour race. He has also competed in a number of eight to ten hour adventure races and four 30 hour adventure races.
As an older adult David has come to the realization that to participate in the sports that he once took for granted he needs to complement his outdoor training with an exercise routine in the gym to keep up his strength and to help prevent injury. He also believes that exercise is crucial for his both his mental and physical health. This is the same message he works to instill in all the members and personal training clients he meets with in the gym.

Fern McIver is the Fitness Coordinator at the HSC staff Fitness Centre. She received a degree in Kinesiology at the University of Winnipeg, and is a CSEP-Certified Personal Trainer. Fern is a qualified fitness instructor, who teaches group resistance training, indoor cycling, HIIT, as well as sport specific conditioning for performance. Fern brings many years of education and experience to her classes, but it is her enthusiasm and humor that people seem to enjoy the most.
In addition to her professional experience, Fern has an extensive history of competing in long distance and ultra-distance racing in both running and triathlon. Fern’s favorite races include the Dublin Marathon, Boston Marathon, and Ironman Canada. Recreationally, she enjoys cross country skiing, ice skating, hiking, and kayaking.
Fern admits that the best part about her roles as competitor and personal trainer in Winnipeg’s “endurance racing” community has been spending time with amazingly supportive people in our region’s greatest outdoor spaces.
When it comes to an individual’s pursuit of health, fitness and performance goals, Fern believes the self-improvement journey leads to endless possibilities.
