The Intensive Care Unit at the Winnipeg General Hospital was officially opened on 23 September 1966 and was considered to be one of the most advanced and modern Intensive Care Units in the world. This exhibit draws on textual records, newsletters, photographs, and first-hand accounts to showcase the history of critical care at HSC.
From 1914-1918, over 140 graduates from the Winnipeg General Hospital and Children’s Hospital Schools of Nursing enlisted with the Canadian Army Medical Corps (CAMC). This exhibit features biographical information about the nursing sisters from Winnipeg General and Children’s Hospital who served during World War One.
With the opening of the new HSC Women’s Hospital at 665 William Avenue in 2019, we want to celebrate and recognize the legacy and history of women’s and maternal health at HSC. This exhibit draws on textual records, newsletters, photographs, and first-hand accounts from hospital staff collected over the 70-year history of the Women’s Hospital.
Since our inception, dedicated medical professionals and caregivers have inspired the development of specialized services, training institutions, and countless modern health facilities here at HSC. To mark the milestone of 150 years since the founding of Winnipeg General Hospital in 1872, we invite you to discover more about the history of Health Sciences Centre.
