Our History

Health Sciences Centre (HSC) Winnipeg is the largest health care centre in Manitoba. We are an interdisciplinary team of nearly 8,000 staff and volunteers who serve people in Manitoba, northwestern Ontario, and Nunavut.

HSC was created by The Health Sciences Centre Act, which was passed by the Manitoba Legislature on 20 July 1972, and which came into effect on 1 February 1973. The Act merged several established healthcare institutions, including the Winnipeg General Hospital (which included the Women’s Maternity Pavilion), the Children’s Hospital of Winnipeg, and the Manitoba Rehabilitation Hospital – D.A. Stewart Centre.

On 1 April 2000, Health Sciences Centre amalgamated with the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority (WRHA), and since has been governed by the WRHA Board of Directors. The Health Sciences Centre Act was subsequently repealed by the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba, and in 2001, HSC became an operating division of the WRHA.

The Health Sciences Centre has a rich and diverse history. This site hopes to document some of that history by illustrating the changes to the HSC campus since its beginning as the Winnipeg General Hospital. All of the photographs featured here come from the HSC Archives/Museum, which holds a rich collection of records, photographs, audio-visual material, and artifacts related to HSC and its predecessors.
